ryan payton, born the second of six children to franklin, account manager for a hotel chain, and carol payton, speech therapist, grew up in the great fist pumping state of new jersey. the middle class family was well on the way to white picket fences and the puppy when his youngest sister was diagnosed with lukemia at the age of three. for twelve year old ryan that meant gone were the days of both parents attending his basketball games and no longer were the days of trips into new york to see broadway shows. the whole family instead spent most of their days at his sister's bedside until she finally passed two years later.
ryan's performance in school had always been lackluster, to put it kindly, his attendance only functioning as a way to be able to spend mandatory hours hanging with his friends and to be a part of the school's drama program. it was after his turn as a t-bird in his high school's performance of grease that ryan was approached by a gentleman in a nice suit asking if he had ever considered acting or modeling as a profession. of course this set of all sorts of warning bells for the payton family but after vetting that this was indeed not a stranger danger situation, ryan and his mother drove into new york city to meet with the gentleman that would become his first manager. true to his word, it wasn't long before ryan was balancing both going to high school and going to a fitting for a shoot for old navy. it wasn't unusual for him to walk through a mall and see posters of his face looking back at him from teen-oriented stores. while he found this basically mortifying his friends found it absolutely hilarious. a sit down conversation took place a year into his run as teen model and he expressed interest in moving out of the print world and into acting. five months and a few commercials later, the script for the role of dean on gilmore girls was handed to him by his manager, and his senior year of high school was done via the post office because he was on set in burbank, california. ryan has a bit of a chip on his shoulder, though he'd never admit it, believing that some of the best of his work (especially early on in his career) were the overlooked projects that never lasted a season or films that never made it into wide distribution. instead he has fans that stop him on the street, even now, that stop him on the street to tell him about how much they loved (or hated) his gilmore girls role. the infamy of his earlier roles is a thing he understands, and is gracious about, but nonetheless makes him realize he has no real gauge for figuring out what project will be successful. the fact that he chooses roles based on his gut and not smarter metrics should probably worry him more than it currently does but with a career that now finally involves more hits than misses he hasn't quite gotten to that point just yet. he had a feeling that gone girl was a good project, and enough years in the business to realize just how lucky he was to work with david fincher, but the resounding amount of success garnered from the film was a happy surprise. living in new york now, where there is at least one famous person per city block, ryan still struggles to consider himself much of a celebrity, at least in the most obnoxious of definitions. his media image is very much of the very-man, even when that means tripping over his feet after leaving a club with his friends or mismatching his clothing or locking himself out of his car (all of these things being occurrences from the last twelve months). the thing that keeps him grounded most of all, however, is his close relationship with his family and the work that he does with st.jude in the name of his sister.
